This past weekend, my boyfriend and I went hiking along the Hudson River. To be more specific, we went scrambling at Breakneck Ridge. Sounds a bit scary now doesn't it? Well it was, particularly for someone who has a fear of falling downstairs let alone a mountain at a 45 degree angle. There were some definite moments of fear where I would look down and think, crap...it's a long, long way down. And then, I'd look up and try and find the next spot to put my hand. Being from California and living near the mountains, I've done my fair share of hiking before despite my new yorkcitygirlness (new word, just made it up), but this was something totally new. There were a few thoughts going through my head: 1. I hope I don't slip, fall, and die (back to the fear of falling thing), 2. When will this be over? and 3. I hope I'm burning a lot of calories.
What made it all worth it were the incredible views, the feeling of accomplishment and not dying, and the walk down. The walk down (besides the obvious walking is easier than scrambling aspect) was beautiful - the colors of the trees were gold and the sky was incredibly blue. And despite the fact there were other hikers on the trail, there were many moments we found ourselves completely alone in a forest of gold.
